Daddies, Mouses, Social Interaction, and a Dash of Zorro!

One of J-Man’s favorite words lately is ‘mouse’ (mow-muh – as in ‘ow’ not a long ‘o’), thanks to the new Best Book in the Universe (TM), The Napping House, which he has completely memorized. We read it before his bath, and he could pretty much recite the whole thing to me at this point in J-Man-ese.

So, he went as a mouse for Halloween (that and the costume was $5 at Old Navy). We took him outside in full costume for pictures, and he started running down the sidewalk. So he and I trotted around the neighborhood, half-mile loop until a good-sized hill wore him out and I had to carry him about 1/4-mile home. We never actually stopped at any houses, though people loved watching him scamper by. He wouldn’t eat the candy anyway, and we have candy in ridiculous excess leftover anyway.

As Mary said, he’s been a total Daddy’s boy lately, which is fine by me! The best thing in the world this week was when I picked him up from school one day and he ran up to me and said “Dah-deh”. I’m getting all teary here just writing that. The ‘d’ sound is really hard for him, and he’s rarely ever said or tried to say ‘Daddy’ as best I can tell at any point in his life. So obviously I savor every time it happens.

The even bester part is that he’s been saying it a lot over the past couple of days. Talk about the total cure for whatever ails you!

Last night we did one of our fill-in-the-blank, speech-therapy kind of things, though I didn’t think he’d do it. I said, “J-Man…” (using his real name of course) and then pointed at Mary and he said “Mah-mah” (Yay!) and then I put my hand on myself and he said “Dah-deh”. (Yay! ^2)

You have no idea what an incredible achievement this is for him. Well, I’m sure at least some of you actually do.

Today at flu shot day, he even high-fived the nurse. What the.. !? Social interaction! We’ll take it!

And while in line, we sang the ABC song – which he’s getting a few more of the sounds for now. When we got to ‘Z’, he actually zig-zagged his fist across his body and made a Z shape. Woot! Zorro lives!

OK, gratuitous father/son picture time! Later!

I’m finally getting a chance to come around here and catch up and just have to say this is too, too, too cute! :)
